North Norfolk weekly traditional markets are under review by North Norfolk District Council. The markets included are Sheringham Market (Wed & Sat), Cromer Market Friday, North Walsham Market Thursday and Stalham Tuesday Market.

Whether you are a local who uses North Norfolk markets on a regular basis or an occasional market shopper or even a tourist, your input could be vital to help ensure our markets continue.

During the history of the markets in this area, very little if anything has been done to promote them, this needs to change, markets are a valuable tourist attraction, they bring colour, atmosphere and a great sense of community to the above towns.

North Norfolk markets provide a rich variety of stalls, personal service, a lively and friendly atmosphere. Use them or lose them!

The holidays are here and so is the sunshine! We've had lots of sunny days on the North Norfolk coast during this holiday and it is set to continue tomorrow for Sheringham Market.

Don't forget you can visit Sheringham Market two days a week Saturday and Wednesday. The Saturday market is the larger of the two but Wednesday hosts lots of great stalls too.

While the weather is so fine, it's a great time to polish up the car. The Vacwash Spares stall sells a great range of Autoglym products, ideal to shine up your vehicle so it sparkles in the sun! You can also find long handled brushes which are great to clean those hard to reach fascias, caravan or camper van roofs. Leather chamois and sponges are also available and lots more. So take advantage of the lovely weather and get the cleaning done!

The Vacwash spares stall is at Sheringham Market on Saturdays and Wednesdays, as is the plant stall, Myriad Life Jewellery Stall, the tools & electrical stall, the bookman, the shoe stall, Pantaloon clothing, Arthur's gold, silver & gemstone jewellery, menswear stall, keycutters, Ivan's clothing & sunglasses stall and more..The tea/snack wagon visits both markets so you will never be short of something to eat or drink.

The fruit & veg stall and fish wagon are only at market on Saturdays.

From 15th-16th April Fri/Sat, Sheringham is host to an International Market which will be selling foods, crafts and clothing. Combine your visit to Sheringham International Market with a trip to the regular Sheringham Saturday market to enjoy the best of local stalls and stalls from abroad.

Sheringham hosts a great itineray of events throughout the summer season and a lot of them are scheduled for Saturdays/Weekends so you can enjoy a proper day out which includes shopping at our great market!

Beautiful warm day at Sheringham Market

The first Wednesday market of the season at Sheringham kicked off today and what a lovely start it was! Breezy but warm and bright sunshine this afternoon.

Most of the usual Wednesday stalls were there, including: the plant stall (Norfolk Landscaping), two ladies clothing stalls, the watch repairer, the ironing board cover & magnetic jewellery stall, Arthur's gold & silver jewellery, the Myriad Life Jewellery stall (fashion jewellery & scarves), tools & electrical, the book man, the shoe stall, vaccuum spares & car cleaning equipment, household stall, menswear stall, mobile phone accessories, bedding stall which includes duvets and pillows, haberdashery and of course our trusty tea/snack wagon!

I am sure as the season continues a few other traders may well turn up too, especially if the good weather continues.

The next market at Sheringham is the regular Saturday market, so if you are planning to visit the North Norfolk coast over the weekend, be sure to drop in and take a look around the market (it is a bit bigger on the Saturday.)

Changes afoot at Sheringham Market

Shortly the market will look slightly different but all the favourite stalls will still be there so make sure you look out for them!
A new market manager means a few changes and hopefully they will all be for the positive future of the market.

It is time that Sheringham Market is given more promotion so hopefully in the not too distant future more information about the twice weekly market (Wednesdays seasonal April-Oct, Saturday all year round) will appear on the NNDC website.

Don't forget that Sheringham Wednesday Market starts again 6th April and runs until October. It is a smaller version of the Saturday market but still very much worth a visit with lots of great stalls.

Future Management of Market

Traders today received a letter from NNDC to inform them that as of 1st April 2011 Norse no longer will manage North Norfolk markets on behalf of the council. From April the Property Services section of North Norfolk District Council will manage all aspects of the markets at Sheringham, Cromer and Stalham.

The Council states in the letter it is 'keen to promote the markets to ensure their continued viability.'

Out in the cold - NNDC Council policy

With snow and ice gripping the nation over the past couple of weeks, local market businesses have been hit hard. The icy road conditions have been unsafe for many traders to travel to markets and for those brave enough to make the journey it means standing out in subzero temperatures all day.

Fair enough, some will say setting up a market stall business is a personal choice so complaining when weather conditions are unfavourable is par for the course. This is true, trading outside in this country is very much a gamble but then all business is a gamble. Any business owner will understand this.

Markets come with ancient history as sites for trading. This is where shopping began from the year dot. It is very important to keep this tradition going as it is part of our country's rich culture and heritage.

Markets have many attributes, not only do they add interest to a town, they bring in tourism, boost the local economy, and play an important part in local communities.

What a shame then, that when bad weather strikes that more cannot be done by the council market traders pay their rents to. Often passers-by think that traders only have to pay a tiny sum if anything at all to trade at markets. This is not the case, regular traders pay a weekly rent and they have to cover that in their takings.

When the car park ices over at Sheringham Station road car park like other car parks across the county, it is not NNDC council policy to grit them. Fair enough, it would take a lot of grit to cover all the car parks and grit as we know it, seems to run out quickly. However, when it is known market day falls every Saturday and the gritters and snow plough are out in the town the day before market, surely they could make the car park safer for traders and customers alike.

Apparently not. It remains council policy not to treat the car park. No special dispensation for extreme weather conditions or the fact that it becomes unsafe for traders to set up their stalls and customers to visit them.

Last year, I set up my stall on Sheringham car park in the snow. I gritted my area and so did the handful of other traders who managed to get there. However, it was not possible for us to grit the whole area to make it safe for customers to get to us. Consequently we did not get many customers and our efforts to trade in the snow went unrewarded.

Why can't NNDC think beyond policy in extreme conditions? Sheringham Market brings business to the town. The shops, pubs, restaurants etc must be affected by this policy too, if potential customers can't park and walk safely into the town, they won't and trade gets hit hard all over.

The EDP does a great deal to support local business. Everyone is trying to stop the demise of small business and the rural and coastal towns in which they trade but the most powerful possible ally the NNDC appears to turn its back when help is requested. Why?

The usual argument is legal insurance implications, well perhaps these for once need to be challenged or ways to be found round them. Otherwise, if we are set to have snow every winter, markets could disappear.

Well it's been a mixed summer at Sheringham market with the weather conditions but September has brought with it some sunshine and warmth which is great because this upcoming weekend (3rd-5th September) is Sheringham Steam Gala with visiting locomotives and special events.

You'll find the twice weekly Sheringham Market on Station Road car park Saturday all year round and Wednesday (seasonal until end October, begins again spring 2011)

You'll find lots to buy at the market including fresh produce, clothing, jewellery, pet supplies, pictures, car cleaning products, handbags, shoes, books and a whole lot more...

Sheringham Railway Line

Work is currently underway on the new rail line extension at Sheringham which will officially be opened on March 11 by Pete Waterman.

Station Road Toilets in Sheringham

The Station Road public toilets in Sheringham have been given an overhaul. This might not sound that exciting but for the Market traders and for people who get off the bus or train, it's really quite important!

For years the toilets have been left to get old and unpleasant to use. Cold water to wash your hands in is both unhygienic and in mid winter really horrible. The cubicles were smelly, the doors often broken and not shutting properly and the wash basins too small with only a cold water tap to wash with.

Thankfully all that has changed now with newly fitted doors, toilets and sink units including hot running water at last. Now we won't have to be embarrassed when we stand in the queue in summer hearing visitors to this wonderful Norfolk seaside town complaining about the state of the loos.

Cromer Friday Market

More traders are needed at Cromer Friday Market.

The market is situated next to a brand new tourist information centre in the town and has suffered some disruption while works at the tourist centre were carried out. Things are back to normal now but more traders are needed to make the market attractive to visitors.

You will need to contact the Market Manager at North Norfolk District Council for further information re pitch rents and to give details of what you would like to sell there.

Sheringham Stalls

Today I have begun to add pictures of stalls at Sheringham Market. It will take time to get them all on here but please bear with me!

Now you can see Clive's Picture Stall where you can buy an amazing assortment of pictures of everything from famous footballers, vehicles, flowers, scenery & much more. You can buy a frame or get your picture framed here, also you will find mirrors & a selection of handmade cards.

Norfolk Landscaping is owned by Ian, a chap with a very cheeky sense of humour! Visit his stall for fabulous plants and trees, it's awash with colour. Perfect for all garden sundries.

The Wickerware Stall offers all sorts of useful baskets & containers made from sturdy wicker. Log baskets, plant holders, shelves, shopping baskets you name it, you'll find it here. Once you've visited Norfolk Landscaping for your plants check out this stall for ceramic planters, they're very pretty! You will also find very attractive environmentally Jute Bags, useful & stylish.

All this shopping will no doubt leave you somewhat hungry and thirsty, the perfect place to stop for a cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and a freshly prepared snack is the Carousel Catering Wagon. With seats & tables positioned at the front of the wagon you can rest your weary shopping legs and relax amidst the friendly atmosphere of the market.

All of the above stalls visit Sheringham every Wednesday (March-October) and Saturdays throughout the year.

We want to encourage more people to come to Sheringham and enjoy shopping on our wonderful market.Sheringham is a coastal town in North Norfolk, a charming place to visit at any time of year.

Sheringham market supplies an enormous range of quality goods & produce at excellent prices. The traders are a friendly bunch, serious business people who provide an excellent personal service to all their customers. They all love a chat and a joke!

After many years of holding a market in Sheringham, us traders feel we really must shout about our market. The market is often ignored in local advertising and we want to change all that, so we are launching a campaign to tell visitors and locals why it's a good thing to support our British markets.

Why is it good to support your local market, or visit markets in Norfolk and elsewhere?

All traders are local business people from the Norfolk area supporting the local economy. We pay our rents to local councils and sometimes private market hosts. By visiting independent local traders customers are helping independent businesses survive which can only be a good thing in the face of globalisation.

Markets support the local community in more ways than one. It's not just about doing business, many elderly people depend on the weekly market for a bit of social interaction they wouldn't otherwise enjoy. Traders nearly always have time for a chat and often make good friends with local people.

When you support your local market you are believe it or not shopping in a much more environmentally friendly way. Traders rarely use electricity for lighting or heating both of which contribute to global warming. A majority of traders don't travel for more than an hour to get to market. All stalls are cleared away at the end of the day leaving the area just as it was.
